Loved this post, I hope 'Checking Things Out' wasn't scared off by the debate cause I thought it was phenomenal. I have to say as one who has always been frustrated by the great deal of diverging opinions on proper nutrition that at least this site is fair and open to criticism and welcomes questions and debate. In complete honesty I'll admit that I don't believe we should be basing our dietary choices solely on what we 'theorize' that paleo-man may have been eating, but if we find that those 'theoretical' choices are making us healthier and living better and longer (see figure Tommy Mo above) then the facts should speak for themselves. I like what Bill said about 'real world results' because that's what we're all really after. Speaking too as one like Tommy who tried the complex carbs/low fat intake road for years that I have found it much easier to maintain a consistent weight and more active fitness level while enjoying more overall calories. I'm sure there are other factors contributing to that as well i.e. Bill/Jennie/Zach killing me 4-5 times a week at the fort, but the nutrition side has definitely played a vital role.

There was an article in WSJ today about mummies with signs of heart disease (seriously).

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125849125093052279.html?mod=djemPJ#articleTabs%3Darticle

While the article doesn't do much in the way of suggesting how or why pharaohs developed heart disease. I find it very interesting to consider the fact that wheat was the primary staple food in ancient Egypt - so much so that pharaohs were buried it (afterlife snacks presumably).

This is hardly proof that a paleo diet is better for your heart, I just found it interesting to consider that mummies likely had heart disease without ever eating McDonalds. I feel like a food pyramid pun would be apropos, but I don't have one.

I really enjoyed this post! I like nearly all of them but this one really was very good. Of course, I always enjoy the facts and supporting details.

BTW - Bill is 100% correct when he says this:

"Some of our most disciplined members are around 40 years of age and have stellar lipid profiles."

I won't speak for others, but I'll raise my hand here and say that I am very near 40 and went through all of the testing and my lipid profile came back very positive. It was truly an eye-opening experience for me.

High Level - I used to eat "clean" as defined by all of the "experts" in the field. I ate egg whites, healthy whole grains, chicken and fish with very little Sat Fat. Limited Red Meat, NO yolks, bacon, etc. But, lotta veges and fruit. Worked out 5-6 days a week at high intensity.
Result - High LDL, Low HDL, TG's good, Cholesterol over 200.

Then I changed to limited chicken and fish, a lot of red meat and bacon. Very limited Dairy. No grains. Lower Carb, higher fat, etc.
Result - Lower LDL, High HDL, TG's good, Cholesterol lower.

And I am not alone here either. We don't just "buy-in" automatically. We challenge, debate, ask questions, research and test. Then, most importantly, we follow-up and follow-through.

I believe what Bill says to be very sound advice. My own efforts and dialogue with him matched with my follow-through prove his advice is accurate.

I won't even comment on my doctor's reaction. Let's just say he was beyond impressed with my results.

Thanks again Bill!
