On the one hand, watching this video made me laugh because of the blatant ignorance and lies. On the other hand, I find this video disgusting because the blatant lies were paid for by the British National Government.
Some things that I thought about while watching this video:
- Saturated fat, when stored in the fridge would be ROCK solid, not liquid.
- The fat was liquid in the fridge, but solid at room temperature. I would suggest having the serviceman take a look at the fridge.
- Some saturated fats, like coconut oil and butter, will actually be a liquid at room temperature. Last I checked, my internal temperature is much higher than room temperature and therefore would result in the fat being liquid.
- Just because something clogs the drain doesn't mean it will clog my arteries.
- The fat isn't being injected directly into our blood. This little process called digestion is being completely ignored.

So many people think the government knows best and they live by the mantra "the government would tell me if I should or should not eat something". These types of ads make me mad because they do not look at the overall picture of health. They scare people into eating foods that have been disassembled and re assembled into things such as low fat, low sugar, half calorie which are a far cry nutritionally from what their original counterpart truly is, and for what...MONEY!!!

MMMMMM! Fat! What a waste, pouring it down the sink like that
I have a tub of tallow and I'm happy to share if anybody feels like they're missing out!

I'm with you Bill. Two sides to this coin and one of them is just as disgusted as you are.
You're reaction is perfect: "blatant ignorance". What I would like to know is why any government finds it beneficial to publicize wrong information. Isn't there money to be made in food that IS good for me?
I just don't get it. I'm gonna mail one of my 5lb packages of Grass-Fed beef fat to the UK government

Zach, mail it my way instead. They won't appreciate the gesture!

Considering the horror stories about socialized medicine that have come out of Britain, I would hesitate to trust any message they were pushing before I even watched it.
I take this attitude with all political advertisements, whether from individuals or interest groups.
As for the government pushing certain things...well...the first couple chapters of GCBD calories are a good antidote.

Bill that's an interesting clip, I know the conventional wisdom says saturated fat is the worst for you and monounsaturated is the best and the retarded cousin of the family, trans fat, is a hot topic of debate being that it exists nowhere in nature and is essentially created in a lab. Being that paleo is all about the saturated fats that are in meat I assume you would think that trans fats are the worst, what about mono and poly's though, as they're plentiful in nuts and oils, which seem also to be a staple of the paleo way.

Mark -
Saturated Fats - either lower cancer risk or are neutral (completely stable)
Monounsaturated Fats - lower cancer risk
Polyunsaturated Fats - increase cancer risk (highly unstable)
Trans Fats - man-made version from vegetable oils is nasty stuff (also called 'partially hydrogenated' oils) / naturally occurring form in animal fats is completely healthy
Interesterified Fats - newer man-made fat that is worse than Trans Fats
Avoiding man-made fats as well as oils that are high in polyunsaturated fats (vegetable oil, canola oil, soybean oil, etc.) is the way to go.
Nuts aren't as black and white though. It is my opinion that nuts are great because it is an easy snack for people to have on hand when they are first trying to go Paleo. However, I am not a big fan of nuts in large quantities because of the fiber and polyunsaturated fats. If we take it a step further, it is probably safe to assume that PaleoMan would have never eaten nuts in the quantities that some of us do, due to the amount of time and energy that would have been required to collect and shell all of them. This time and energy would be better spent hunting large game which is much more calorie/nutrient dense. I guess what I'm saying is to eat nuts if you like them and digest them well, but don't center your diet around them.

Attention Bill, Emergency Nutrition advice needed!
Hey man I'm in Ohio for the week and I am dying to try and stay on the good eating wagon, I've dodged some bullets with breakfast and lunch the best I can (hard boiled eggs and lunchmeat was all I had) but dinner I have control over for the most part in that we're going out to eat. I'm wondering in your opinion are there some generalities in what to stick to and stay away from with restaurants in general. Like stick to steak and house salads or is seafood a good idea too, I know obviously not breads and pastas but some additional pointers would be good to have, and the sooner the better so this response doesn't have to be a novel if you don't have the time some quick advice would be excellent.
peace

Mark - Stick to meat and veggies even when at a restaurant. Some examples would include steak, burger w/o the bun, and any seafood that isn't breaded and/or fried. Fajitas (w/o the tortillas obviously) are generally a good option as well. If at a mexican restaurant, get one of their steak dinners in red sauce and sub a salad for the rice and beans. Mix the salad in with the steak and red sauce and you won't even need dressing. Adding guacamole to a burger or steak will increase the fat content as will slathering butter on any or all of it. If eating a salad, stay away from their dressings. Ask for oil and vinegar or simply squeeze lemon wedges on your salad instead. Hope this helps!
