How to get a KILLER workout even on vacation

June 29th, 2009, by

Ok guys, it's summer. It's time for sunshine, outdoor activities and best of all, VACATIONS! A lot of you have come to us asking for some advice on workouts that you can do even while on vacation. If you're serious about your training and your progress, you'll need to get your dose of CrossFit even while vacationing. Ask anyone who has ceased their CrossFit activities for a week and then returned to the Fort. How'd you feel when you got back? Kind of like you had been gone for months? Yeah, I thought so.

If you're staying at a hotel, chances are the fitness room has cool things like this:

Jennie working her lats!

and this:

Pumpin' the Iron

Fear not! We're CrossFitters, and we can be creative as all get-out when it comes to finding ways to workout in a pinch. If you can find something heavy, you can clean it. I used 25lb dumbbells to do dumbbell cleans, and they kicked my BUTT. I also found a ledge to jump on, so as part of our honeymoon festivities I did the following workout:

21-15-9 reps of:
Dumbbell cleans
box jumps
Sit-ups

Can't find dumbbells? Ok, no problem! Here's another workout courtesy of CrossFit legend Eva T:

1 mile run. Stop every minute to do 20 squats.

There are a million different ways to workout even without a gym. Here are a few more examples:

Tabata push-ups, sit-ups, squats.
400m sprints on the beach, with 2:00 rest intervals between
150 burpees for time
3, 4, or even 5 rounds of: 400m run and 50 Squats

You get the picture, right? The point is that you should make fitness a part of your lifestyle, and that includes vacation. These workouts don't take a lot of time, and some of them you could even do from the comfort of your hotel room, or next to the pool. Burpees on the minute would be another SWEET workout!

Not to drown you in information, but my friend Melisa Byers had a great 2-part post on cheat meals. A lot of you have questions about cheating, and her posts address a lot of the common questions. Personally, I think her recommendation of 4-5 times a week is a little too much, but hey, I just crack the whip a little harder than she does! We all have different levels of mental stick-to-it-ness, and sometimes even a small cheat can derail our train. The take away from her posts should be about the QUALITY of your cheats, and dispelling some of the myths surrounding the big C word.

  • Ever since joining CF, I use the lat bar completely different. Rather than do what Jennie's doing in the photo I do the following:

    1) Remove Pin
    2) Insert Pin to the bottom of the stack for heaviest weight
    3) Add all additional weight blocks onto stack
---> Stack should have a total weight of approximately ~300+LBS

    and finally, the exercise:

    1) Grab Lat bar with thumbs tucked under (Wild Bill is always watching)
    2) Rep out 25 Pull-ups

    Done! Great Blast!

  • There are other exercises you cando on your honeymoon...like you were next to an ocean you can swim. What did you think I was going to say, sex?

  • I'm free for team saturday for the first time in like a month...but I'm not sure if there is a team saturday. Anyone?

  • Jeff and everyone else - Yes, we are still planning on having Team Saturday at 9am. I have to confirm the parade route with the Village to ensure we won't be affected though. I will get a post up once I have all of the details finalized.
