No publicity is bad publicity, right? While her views might be somewhat skewed, and her article FILLED with a sort of jealously, Virginia Heffernan of the NY Times wrote an article about CrossFit on 3/23/08.

"...CrossFitters offer themselves as evidence that people are capable of more than merely giving up sugar for Splenda and taking the stairs occasionally; according to the CrossFit creed, they can and should also be prepared to fell trees, tame bulls and carry families of four on their backs. Olympians, soldiers, police officers, firefighters and devoted fitness amateurs convene on the site, reveling in max squats and circus-strongman stunts, which they repeat as many as 100 times per workout. This is exercise not for vanity or for longevity but for an imagined moment of heroism that may never come."

Anyone else feeling the burn after last night's workout? OUCH!

Part of our skill work segment last night was to practice our L-sits. We were quite impressed by Mike's L-Sit. Look at the concentration! The determination! He was quivering like a leaf, but he held out for 20 seconds and earned himself a new personal record! Way to go Mike!

Congratulations to Bill on a new PR - he did 15 dead hanging pull ups last night! Way to go!

In other news, Zach finally did his first unassisted pull up last night. (applause)

Occasionally we stray from our Trader Joe's shopping, and find ourselves wandering the Meijer near our house. We got a good laugh out of their aisle labeled "healthy living selection". Check out the picture:

Maybe it isn't obvious from the picture, but the WHOLE AISLE was chock full of chips, pretzels and processed foods. I suppose there were a few boxes of "low fat something or other" and "low sodium yummys", but certainly this stuff isn't what we define as "healthy". I think Meijer should move their sign over by the produce section or the meat counter. Just my $0.02.

It's official! CrossFit Fire is listed on the CrossFit home page! (throwing confetti)

In other news, our pull up bar system is nearly complete. We still need to fit the stall mats around it, but otherwise it's GOLDEN! Bill set a new personal record - he did 12 dead hanging pull ups last night!

We found an interesting article on sugar and nutrition on "THE IF LIFE" website. Here is my favorite part:

Your #1 enemy, sugar and all it’s hiding places (drinks, sauces, dressings, etc). If it has a label, read it and see what sugars you are really getting, as everything you put into your mouth counts! Why is sugar bad? Because sugar will be quickly absorbed into the blood which cause a spike in your blood sugar and with that spike the body releases insulin to take care of it (shuttle excessive blood sugar into the fat cells for storage!). So like I tell my clients, every time you put sugar into your mouth just tell youself “I don’t feel like burning fat for the next 3-4 hours” as that is exactly the hormonal signal you are giving it.
