Ready legs, let’s do this!

January 21st, 2010, by

Every now and then, I get to overhear a conversation at the Fort that really makes my day. Yesterday was one of those days. I have been coaching some early morning ramp-up classes, so I've had the opportunity to see the GYG in action. Here was the conversation I overheard:

Garth: Grunt! Man, that was heavy! (goes to get more weight)

Zach: Now Garth, let's evaluate this situation. You just struggled to get 50kg's up...actually, you almost hurt yourself doing it. Now I see that you're adding MORE weight. Explain to me how that makes any sense.

Garth: (laughs) I just thought if I went a little heavier it would help my form.

Do you guys see how something like that would make my day? I was trying to coach a ramp-up, but I had to stop and giggle. At the same time as I was giggling, I thought to myself that this would be a good lesson for all of you. Adding weight is NOT a way to fix form. Don't tell me that you can get your squats below parallel once you put 80kg's on the bar. Do it right, or don't add weight; it's as simple as that.

The strength work was power snatch 2-2-2-2-2.

We then followed up with a little metcon that all of us with sore shoulders LOVED!

21-15-9
Overhead squat (50/35kg)
burpees

Yeah burpees! I definitely underestimated this workout when I saw it on the board. Those were some of the hardest burpees I've ever had to do! Great job to everyone for completing this workout!
