The humidity decided to make its return to CrossFit Fire yesterday, but that's ok. We're tough. We can handle the heat, humidity and mosquitoes. And when summer goes away and winter comes, we'll have our doors open even if there's 13" of snow an hour falling. Know why? Because what we do is fun. No matter what's going on in the world, people should make time for the things in their life that are fun, ESPECIALLY if those same things are going to help you live a longer, fuller life.
*steps off soap box*
Our workout yesterday was pretty cool. It was a long list of stuff to look at, and I was surprised at how many of you thought it said "run" when in fact it said "row". Are your brains jumping to conclusions?!
400m row
20 dumbbell push press
20 pull-ups
300m row
15 dumbbell push press
15 pull-ups
200m row
10 dumbbell push press
10 pull-ups
100m row
5 dumbbell push press
5 pull-ups
See? It's a VERY long list, but it wasn't so bad. Everyone has been doing a much better job at scaling, and that should be making your recovery times faster. (aka, you're not as sore) I'm also proud of how many people have been registering for classes! I haven't been putting a star next to registered participant's names...but I might start doing that again. Tommy Mo seems to be pretty motivated by "stars", so I think the tradition will have to make a comeback.
Know what happened yesterday? Jamie (Cupcake) got her first unassisted pull-ups! WAHOO! Since the very first day I met "Tom's nutty neighbor" she has been saying that her goal was to get pull-ups. Well, yesterday was definitely her day! With three cupcakes in her belly, she knocked down 5 kipping pull-ups in a row! Nice work, Cupcake!
If you plan on coming Sunday to watch the FireFighter Challenge, please be sure not to park in the front of the building in the parking lot. We will be using that space for the course. Also - we will be rolling out the grill, so bring some meat to throw on! Audra talked about bringing her "ghetto pool" so people can float, drink paleo margaritas, and watch hot firemen workout. (Audra has the most AMAZING ideas)

"Nutty" or not, my neighbor can now do unassisted pull-ups!
Way to go, Jamie!

Your title's even better than the one Crossfit HQ used - awesome photo, Jennie! Hmmm... if I can convince our dog to go under one, maybe I can start bringing her to Crossfit with me. I think treats are definitely the key...

I'm surprised Tom's comment didn't include angry invective about Jennie planning to leave the doors open even when there's snow on the ground.
Mrs. Mohr can't stand a little cold, it seems.

Thanks Brian! Your comment on the HQ page had me ROLLING! I'm still giggling every time I think about it.
Maybe I should consult you for a good photo caption before posting my pictures!

Er - that was directed at Brian Watts. As for YOU Mr. Smith, you are quite snarky today! Where've you been all week? The fort has been missing your banter.
August 20, 2010, 1:24 pm
Brian - I'm refraining from any (to use your spiffy vernacular) "angry invective" because those that know me well enough know I'm already shuddering at the thought of low heat in the box.
Look for me WOD'ing VERY close to that garage door switch which will naturally be in the CLOSED position.
60 degree box temperature = bad.very.bad.
95 degree box temperature = good.very.good.

Any time Jennie, though my mind wanders into funnier places once I've been trapped behind my desk for a few hours.
And this Brian is with Tommy on the cold. My wife and I just started Crossfit this May here in Connecticut and we're dreading the box once winter rolls in, especially since we're in the 6AM class. Maybe we'll get to have max effort snowball fights!

There's nothing like the GYG in the dead of winter IMO, running in the darkness seeing nothing but plumes of breath above peoples heads, and Garth still with his shirt off, you can't beat it, that's what got me hooked on 5:30 am, only people who really want to be there brave the elements or put on twenty layers like Tommy. I CAN'T WAIT!!
August 20, 2010, 4:19 pm
I'll be there tomorrow. My back finally seems to be coming around and I was out of town yesterday, which is why I missed my usual Thursday fun.
August 20, 2010, 4:23 pm
Also, increased snarkiness may be due to the fact that I woke up at 4:30 this morning in Washington D.C. I'm back in town now and all I want to do after work is take an absurdly long nap.

Brian Watts - Ya, I am not one for the cold at all and I've been jabbed and poked fun at for exactly what Mark R says below about showing up in many multiple layers. I've always loved the extreme heat when training. The way that others complain about 90+ heat is the same way I complain about 60 degrees or colder. Just a matter of personal preference....
Mark - Dude, way to funny! I remember that really cold morning when we all pressured Garth into going shirtless when running outside. I had my customary 9 layers on (because it was about 18 degrees outside) and he's running shirtless. You also reminded me of the morning we ran 800M runs as part of the WOD and you had the classic line of:
"Some of you guys were so far in front of me that you would just disappear into the black and I'd never see you until you passed me on the way back."
Those really dark mornings are like X-files mornings. Trippin'....
