Garth - Gallstones occur when bile in the gallbladder becomes over saturated with cholesterol. This leads people to believe that foods high in cholesterol and fat should be avoided. The truth is that insulin is what causes this super-saturation. Making matters worse is the fact that a low-fat diet will cause the gallbladder not to empty, allowing the saturated bile to sit there for a long time and become crystallized, forming gallstones. With a healthy, high-fat / low-carb, diet, the gallbladder will empty on a regular basis and there won't be any over saturation of the bile. One last thing is that once gallstones are created, a high-fat diet will cause the gallbladder to empty, with the stones, and this will be painful. Don't misinterpret this pain as being from the high-fat diet, but rather from the gallbladders elimination of the gallstones that a high-carb diet created. Sticking to a low-fat diet will keep the pain down, but only temporarily as the gallstones continue to increase in size and number.

Is there any correlation that you know of to gallstones and insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and fructose? I have a friend that is having problems with gallstones and she has to "avoid fatty foods" because they cause her pain, or at least that's the belief. I remember reading something about sugar and kidney stones but couldn't find anything online regarding gallstones?
